Help with

Selected for audit. Here's what we do.

Help with IRS audits for Indiana businesses and individuals — Form 2848 power of attorney, document compilation, examination meetings, appeals if needed.

An audit notice is unsettling. Most audits we close at the examination level without going to appeals — but the speed and accuracy of the early response matters. Don't call the IRS first. Forward the notice.

What types of IRS audits exist?

Correspondence audits: mail-only, narrow issue (a missing 1099, an unsubstantiated deduction). Office audits: at an IRS office, broader. Field audits: at your office or representative's office, broadest. Most small-business audits are correspondence or office.

What's the first 48 hours look like?

Triage call: we read the notice, identify the issue, and assess scope. File Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) so the IRS contacts us, not you. Request the file from the auditor if not already provided. Build a response plan.

How likely is it to close at exam vs. go to appeals?

About 70% of the audits we handle close at the examination level. The 30% that go to appeals have a meaningfully higher win rate because appeals can weigh hazards of litigation that exam can't.

Common questions

IRS Audit — questions we get

How much does audit representation cost?
Typically $3,000–$15,000 retainer with hourly billing against it, depending on audit scope and complexity. We quote after triage.
Can you defend a return I prepared myself or another CPA prepared?
Yes — Form 2848 doesn't require we prepared the return. We need access to the records.
How long does an audit typically last?
Office or correspondence audits: 3–9 months. Field audits or appeals: 9–24 months. Trust Fund Recovery cases can run longer.
What if the audit results in additional tax owed?
Depends on amount. Installment agreements are usually available; OIC if the amount exceeds documented ability to pay. See IRS Representation.
